Principal’s Message

Dear Friend,
Welcome to the Transfiguration School website. We hope that the information presented here will give you a flavor of our school. Since its founding in 1832, Transfiguration School has provided generations of Irish, Italian and Chinese immigrant children with a solid elementary education and the teachings of the Catholic faith. We are proud of our rich history and the accomplishments of generations of students who have graduated from this school.

During the first 20 years of its existence, Transfiguration School had several homes in the area around what is now City Hall. In 1853, the Church moved into its present home on Mott Street. An adjacent building was renovated to accommodate the thriving parochial school. More than 1,000 students were enrolled in the years just before the Civil War. In 1922, ground was broken for a new school building by the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Hayes, who was himself an alumnus of Transfiguration School. This building has survived to the present day.

Today, we continue to encourage students to strive for academic and personal excellence in a family oriented, faith-filled environment. We challenge students to work to their fullest potential and encourage them to be responsible individuals so that as adults, they will function as independent, thoughtful persons.

Thank you for your interest in our school. You are most welcome to visit us at any time.

Sincerely,
Dr. Patrick A. Taharally
Principal
